Cultural Awareness Week

St Bedes School approached Stockton International Family Centre and wanted to educate the children about countries of the world and also different religions and cultures

The theme was set by St. Bedes. This was based on Italy, China, USA, Native American Indians, Africa and India. We also raised awareness in various religions Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Chinese Culture.

 

Workshops were set up in the hall at the school displaying foods, dress and artefacts related to the countries. There were boards with the various religions that the children could read and then ask questions about them.

 

The whole school attended over the week.

 

The school were hesitant to give the children’s names or pictures to be taken of the children.

 

Cultural Awareness Conference

 

The Conference was organised in partnership with SureStart Central Hartlepool and The Circle. Stockton International Family Centre were asked to assist through the Positive Images Programme arranging the facilitation of speakers and cultural awareness boards displaying Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Buddhism and Chinese culture.

 

The aim of the event was to raise awareness of cultural issues to organisations and community groups. There were main guest speakers who spoke of their religions and cultures in the morning.

 

After lunch workshops were set up giving the opportunity for a further insight into various cultures and religions. The cultures related to Chinese, Japanese, Kashmiri, Pakistani and Travelling Communities.

 

Over a 100 people attended the event.

Celebrating Cultures (Refugee Week Event)

This Event was part of Refugee Week and was held the weekend before Refugee Week started. The event was in partnership with Asylum Support Teams from Stockton, Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland. There were many other organisations involved in preparing for the event.

 

The event was held in Preston Park, Stockton. There was fair ground attractions, music from India, Kurdistan, Australia, China and Africa, and stalls from various organisations.

 

There was a diverse crowd and about 6-700 people attended the event

Arts Cultural Event

The biggest BME community in Stockton on Tees is the Pakistani community. The Positive Images Programme put on an Artistic Cultural Event at ARC Stockton on Tees, which had a Pakistani Comedian/Folk singer, Arabic Music and two Indian Bhangra groups. It was the first time that a mixed event has been held in Stockton. Usually it is a Women’s only and Men’s only events.  It was a seated family event for all ages and tickets were required for the event priced at ₤3.00 & ₤4.50. The aim was to get the communities and sexes to mix the attendance proved that the event was a success by the diverse audience. Approximately two hundred people attended the event.
